The size and relevance of your personal network is one of the most important distinguishing factors, and it's one that can make or break a career. That's why we at BMIM promote Dutch music copyright in both The Netherlands and in key export markets with the aim of increasing the percentage of Dutch music in both the domestic and foreign markets. Each year BMIM is hosting a series of networking activities: BMIM Connects. Whether you want to share your hard-earned knowledge, pitch music, discuss the current state of the industry, get feedback on a project or simply do business, we're delighted to be able to bring people with complimentary skills and areas of expertise together. Get yourself in motion and join us!
With BMIM Connects, Buma Music in Motion underlines its role as a network center for the innovative use of music in media.
NFF Script & Score
Netherlands Film Festival (NFF) and Buma Music in Motion (BMIM) are committed to making more and deeper connections between young filmmakers and the music sector within the NFF Talent Program which takes place on September 30. The core idea is that young filmmakers and composers get acquainted with each other’s work, with composers who write music on the basis of screenplays in development, presenting themselves to filmmakers hoping to inspire and impress them. At BMIM, our hope is that this meet-up will lead to future collaborations and enrich the Netherlands' thriving and innovative audiovisual industries. If you are a film music composer and under 32 years of age, you can sign up at the following address and send us your name, short biography, age, education, photo and overview of your work to firstname.lastname@example.org before August 22nd, and together with NFF we will select five composers. More about BMIM Connects and NFF will follow soon.
Some recent highlights:
Son Mieux and Matchmaking during Cannes Lions
After last year’s success which resulted in Dutch composers writing music for Samsung and Dutch music being synched in a Suzuki campaign, we once again teamed up with the Embassy of Dutch Creativity to invite top agencies and creatives including JWT Istanbul, R/GA New York, Eleven11, WeFilm, Smarthouse Films and Pusher Music Los Angeles/Berlin for another matchmaking session during the Cannes Lions Festival. After this session Son Mieux took the stage and performed for an enthusiastic audience of advertising industry creatives.
Musexpo Creative Summit
End of March we have accompanied composers, media music companies, publishers and songwriters from The Netherlands (members of Buma/Stemra) on a 'sync mission' to Los Angeles, the city that represents one of the world's largest concentrations of sync opportunities in the world. This unique and very special opportunity took place from March 23 until March 30, 2019. Click here for more information.

International Film Festival Rotterdam
We are delighted that the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has forged a partnership with BMIM for its 48th edition in 2019. BMIM contributed to the festival’s music activities and IFFR PRO Days, organising two special music-themed days bringing together filmmakers and composers. On Tuesday January 29th (16.00 - 17.30hr), composer Cliff Martinez (Drive, Spring Breakers and former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer) gave a masterclass about his work and the art of scoring. More information: iffr.com/en/2019/events/masterclass-cliff-martinez
Furthermore we highlighted six Dutch composers and their work during IFFR PRO. This year, following an open call, BMIM and IFFR selected the following composers, all of whom created excellent scores for movies which have premiered in theatres or at festivals: Ella van der Woude, Vincent van Warmerdam, Merlijn Snitker, Minco Eggersman, Floris Verbeij and Alex Simu. They were featured in the CineMart Dossier and got the chance to network with filmmakers during the CineMart sessions. For further information about IFFR Pro: iffr.com/en/pro-days-2019.
Dutch Music Export and BMIM have joined forces and we were delighted to present a "dream team" of music supervisors from the US, Germany, UK, the Netherlands and Denmark at Eurosonic Noorderslag. Under the title Meet the Music Supervisors at ESNS we organised a matchmaking session, because as you know, we're all about facilitating, mobilising and professionalising the creative and music industries, and there's no better or more fun way to do that than by placing like-minded people directly in front of each other.
Meet the Music Supervisors at ESNS is presented by DME, supported by Buma Music in Motion
You could also find us at ESNS 2019 with a few panels about composing, sync and partnerships with brands. On Thursday January 17: I’m With the Brand, Friday January 18: Taking it up a Level: The Soundtrack that makes the Game and on Saturday January 19: The Sync Songwriting Camp Follow-Up Debrief. Also, on Thursday and Friday: we hosted our second sync-themed songwriters camp, where twenty-four immensely talented writers, drawn from acts performing at Eurosonic, were brought together for a two day writers camp in the Artist Village. In the panel on Saturday, a team of specialists, together with the audience, analysed and discussed all the tracks written during the camp.
Playgrounds Festival: Soundscape
Eye and ear candy! Check out the Playgrounds Festival Session XL on sound design. It took place on Friday 30 November with a smashing line up: artists working for Game of Thrones, The Marvel series (The Solos), sound designers for the trailer of Blade Runner 2049 (Echolab), for Oscar nominated shorts (Bram Meindersma), VR and immersive cinema (Sound Anything) and Google Earth VR (Antfood Music & Sound Design).
The Epica Awards 2018
The Epica Awards is the only prize ceremony judged entirely by journalists working for marketing and communications titles. Epica’s aim is to reward outstanding creativity across the fields of advertising, design, media, PR and digital. During the night of November 15th these prizes were presented in Amsterdam in a glittering and entertaining celebration of the best work. Attended by winning agencies and clients, journalists on the Epica jury, local guests, plus the Buma Music in Motion team in support of the Award for Best Music, it was Sizzer that got the party started after everyone picked up their prize. Around 15 BMIM visitors and fans joined us for the evening.
Netherlands Film Festival 2018
During the Dutch Film Festival (NFF), NFF and Buma Music in Motion organised a matchmaking session between young filmmakers and composers in the hope that something would be sparked which might lead to possible collaborations. The filmmakers shared their scripts, screenplays in development, film plans and/or visions, while the composers went to work by making demos for a specific scene. In the Script & Score programme during NFF, composers and filmmakers got acquainted with each other’s work. The event was a success for both parties, and everyone was genuinely enthusiastic, here are some reactions from the filmmakers:
"I felt very honoured to hear an elaborate soundtrack for my film so early in the development of the project."
"I found it very inspiring and special that so many people have given their time and attention to my script and very valuable to listen to what was made."
"We made two follow-up appointments, so it would be very good if we can continue to work with one of them. It is really a matter of looking for the right working match."

International Film Festival Rotterdam
IFFR is one of the largest audience and industry-driven film festivals in the world. During twelve festival days, hundreds of filmmakers and other artists present their work to a large audience. During IFFR, IFFR PRO takes place, which includes expert panels, talks and masterclasses, Rotterdam Lab and much more. IFFR PRO also includes CineMart, the first international co-production market of its kind. CineMart presents a carefully curated mix of international projects that are looking for financing a selective group of around 650 film professionals. We’ve invited composers and publishers to join us for a lunch with international producers and directors during CineMart. During this powerlunch networking was done and we discussed pressing issues like the fact that music is often treated as the hurried final step of a very long process. But what if we worked in a different way? You can find some notes that were taken iffr.com/en/blog/cinemart-x-buma-powerlunch
Meet & Greet Junkie XL at Nederlands Film Festival

In addition, a meet and greet was organised with the composer in order to allow him to connect with talent and professionals from the music industry.
Script & Score and Matchmaking at Nederlands Film Festival
For a second year we were involved in the Nederlands Film Festival through a matchmaking session. Together with NFF we created a special session between Dutch music companies, composers, and producers on the one hand, and the Dutch film industry on the other. Alongside that, we organised a Script & Score: meetings between composers and director/producer duos for projects in production where a composer has still not been chosen. The projects were ‘Kung Fu Leeuw’ from director FroukjeTan & producer Sabine Veenendaal (Submarine) and ‘Hiernamaals’ from director Willem Bosch & producer Felix van Gisbergen (Pupkin).

Among them were representatives from Sony/ATV Europe, The Solos, Spinnin’ Records, MusicAllstars, Nimble Agency, HOUSTON, Modern Day Composers, Solid as a Rock. Benny Sings performed successfully at the Musexpo showcase festival in SIR Studios in Hollywood and also at our Networking event, which we organised together with Dutch Culture USA and Holland Hollywood Connection.
An Afternoon with Jeff Beal
By way of an 'avant-goût' of the forthcoming season of House of Cards, we set up an exclusive afternoon with series composer Jeff Beal in TivoliVredenburg on April 23rd, 2017. During this 'Buma Music in Motion Presents' event, Beal talked about how he composed the music for this Netflix drama, as well his other soundtrack work. After the Q&A, a live-to-screen show took place: performed with an orchestra and a video montage of scenes from the series projected above the stage with Beal conducting.
At the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) Froukje Jansen spoke with filmmaker Boudewijn Koole and composer Alex Simu on the role of music in film, and about how composers and filmmakers meet each other. Boudewijn and Alex collaborated on ‘Beyond Sleep’, the opening film of IFFR 2016 and winner of a Gouden Kalf for Best Film Music.
Writing Camp at Eurosonic Noorderslag
Every January Eurosonic Noorderslag is undeniably the epicentre of European music. For this reason, BMIM joined forces with Sizzer Amsterdam and organised a Writing Camp with nine highly talented (both domestic and international) musicians, who also played the showcase festival at night. During the day they wrote brand-new tailor-made compositions for actual briefs, like the new brand theme for Etos.
